Fires break out at Durban Port

Two separate fires have broken out at Durban Container Terminal, South Africa.

On Saturday afternoon 5 March, a fire broke out inside a container which was situated in the stacking area at the Durban Container Terminal (Pier 2).

A separate fire then broke out on Monday morning 7 March.

“Business continuity plans have been implemented and engagements are taking place with terminal customers,” terminal operator TransNet Ports Authority wrote.

The cause of the fires is still unknown. Investigations are currently underway.

“Terminal Management immediately activated the emergency procedure,” TransNet added.

“The fire services arrived at the scene and successfully extinguished the flames. The impact of the fire spread to three other containers within the stack.”

Operational activities were suspended at berths 108 and 109 until the scene was cleared.

No employees were injured during the fire.
