EFIP calls for more action in EU carbon fight

The European Federation of Inland Ports (EFIP) has described the priorities set out by the EU Green Deal set out by the European Union as “insufficient on their own” and said further measures will be needed if Europe is to reach its goal of carbon neutrality.

In a statement, the EFIP set out a number points which it believes will help the continent cut emissions.

At its heart is the move away polluting modes of transport, such as trucks and roads, to waterways and rail.

To that end the EFIP has called for the creation of a Single European Multimodal Area and a successor programme to NAIADES II to support the inland waterway sector.

The EFIP believes the decarbonisation of various transport modes is central for the achievement of the Green Deal objectives.

This will require a clear and long-term strategy for sustainability and smart mobility that lays out a technology-neutral roadmap that the entire logistics sector can follow.

The Green Deal was unveiled in 2019 and designed to make Europe the first climate-neutral continent in the world by 2050.

While wanting more to be done, the EFIP believes the Green Deal will give inland ports and the European logistics on the whole “a clear direction” for decarbonisation.

EFIP President Friedrich Lehr said: “European support for multimodal transport, new technologies and innovative city logistics will put inland ports on the right course to meet the goals for 2030 and 2050.”
