OOCL loses containers near Dutch coast

A vessel has lost at least five containers approximately 43 kilometres off the Dutch West Frisian Islands, according to the Netherlands Coast Guard.

According to the authorities, the OOCL Rauma encountered high waves on 11 February while it approached the Port of Rotterdam from the Port of Kotka, Finland.

That number has since increase to seven and the authorities say that they carried paper, cardboard and, according to reports, powdered milk.

The authorities also said that no hazardous substances were on board and none had been spilled.

The Netherlands Coast Guard also posted pictures of the OOCL Rauma on Twitter.
It is the first loss of containers in the North Sea since the MSC Zoe, one of the largest containerships in the world, lost 342 in January 2019, a story Port technology International (PTI) reported on.

In that instance some of the containers, which included flat screen TVs, clothing and furniture, washed up on the West Frisian Islands, just off the Dutch coast.
